One-sentence reviews: Radio silence edition

Long stretches of silence on this site are nothing new, but this one might be longer than most. I’m embarking on a large-scale upgrade of the code that powers this site, so I’m going to spend a good portion of my days brushing off my rusty object-oriented programing. At night, I’m working on yet more Eponymous 4 material. Essentially, I’m neglecting all my web sites.

If something interesting pops up on Bounce, of course I’ll post something, but the backlog of reviews will just have to keep piling up. In the meantime, here’s a quick preview of what I might be writing about in the distant future.

  • ACO, Kittenish Love She sounds so young on this album.
  • Björk, Volta Probably the first album of hers I’ve really liked since Homogenic.
  • bloodthirsty butchers, blue on red At some point, I really have to explore this band’s earlier work.
  • Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Chamber Symphony/Double Concerto/Symphony No. 2 "Cello" I remember hearing a Zwilich work on public radio 15 years ago, then reading about her in Pulse! magazine. Never got around to investigating her works, but she must have left some sort of impression to make me download this disc from eMusic.
  • Ivri Lider, Melatef V’meshaker Gay Israeli pop star — not bad in a pre-English Shakira sort of way.
  • Levi Kreis, One of the Ones Overly earnest piano balladry, but it’s a nice contrast from Super Junky Monkey and bloodthirsty butchers.
  • Quruli, Zukan Ambitious by half.
  • Rufus Wainwright, Release the Stars "Going to a Town" is probably my favorite single of the year.
  • Rufus Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright I wasn’t wrong — his voice really is grating on this album. Thank diety his subsequent albums improved.
  • Sarah Bettens, Scream Man, what a dyke.
  • Super Junky Monkey, Parasitic People and Screw Up Oh, man, did I score when I found these used!
  • Uncle Tupelo, No Depression I owned this album once but sold it for cash when times got tough. I’m glad it was remastered.
  • Various artists, Revolutions: Music with a Twist Compilation from the Sony-run imprint for gay and lesbian musicians featuring Lider, Kreis and Bettens — are any of them actually signed to the label?
  • Voxtrot, Voxtrot For all the terrible singer-songwriters in this town, the occasional buzz-worthy indie band makes living in Austin worthwhile.
